Despite the ordinary elements portrayed, this painting works as a visual enigma between the real and the imaginary. The woodcut windows in
bas relief are depicted in the same way as the landscape in the background; blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. Windows could be a
home’s frame towards the sky or even physically be in the sky – like on an airplane view or a bird’s eye perspective. The left side of the painting is
composed by two white pigeons in flight, connected by a string, as if they were building their own home-nest.
Through the use of images which are comprehended in themselves and are painted in a realistic manner, the spectator is invited to uncover the poetry of mystery in the everyday world.
“Anyone who looks for symbolic meanings in my paintings will not grasp the poetry and the mystery inherent in the image.” -R. Magritte
